About this cocktail

The Margarita's origin story has too many claimants for any of them to be definitive. The version most bartenders pour today comes from the early 1940s, somewhere between Tijuana and Acapulco. Tequila, fresh lime, orange liqueur, and a touch of agave syrup. Salt rim optional but traditional. As a freezer batch it works best within a week, while the lime is still bright; after that the citrus turns into a pale ghost of itself. Use a 100% agave blanco tequila and squeeze the limes the same day you batch.

Shaken citrus drinks pick up more water from ice. Spirit-forward stirred drinks need less; freezer batches often need none.

Pro Tips

  • + Shake the bottle well before each pour to recombine
  • + Add a pinch of salt to the bottle - it enhances the tequila
  • + Use 100% agave tequila for best results
  • + Fresh lime juice stays delicious for weeks in the freezer
  • + No water needed - lime juice provides the liquid balance

Avoid These

  • Using bottled lime juice
  • Adding too much water (the citrus already dilutes)
